Meet Kris: Elev8’s Creative English Teacher Inspiring Confidence Through Fun, Music, and Minecraft

We’re happy to introduce one of Elev8’s most vibrant new teachers, Kris, a creative English educator with a passion for helping students learn through joy, connection, and curiosity. With years of experience in Japanese schools, a background in the arts, and a love for immersive learning, Kris brings something truly special to the classroom!

From California to the Classroom

Originally from California, Kris has spent the past five years living in Japan, working in public schools and inspiring students of all levels feel confident using English in real-world situations. His approach is relaxed, fun, and highly student-centred, all about making learners feel safe, seen, and engaged.

Kris’s calm energy and natural sense of humour have made him a favourite with students and staff alike. He’s a firm believer that language learning doesn’t have to be intimidating, it should be interactive, expressive, and sometimes even a little silly.

“I always want students to enjoy being in the room,” says Kris. “If they’re smiling, they’re learning, even if they don’t realise it yet.”

A Musician and a Minecraft Adventurer

Outside the classroom, Kris is a talented musician with a love for guitar, songwriting, and everything music related. He’s also a lifelong gamer, often diving into open-ended PC games like Minecraft, something he loves to connect with kids over.

“Minecraft isn’t just a game, it’s a world you can build together. That same mindset applies to language. You construct, you explore, and you try things out.”

This creative mindset filters into Kris’s teaching style, making his lessons feel like a space where students can build confidence, take risks, and find joy in communication.

What Will Kris Be Doing at Elev8?

This summer, Kris will be leading our English programme with younger campers, helping them build strong foundations in speaking, listening, and confidence, all through interactive activities, games, storytelling, and conversation.

Whether it’s playing language games, guiding group projects, or simply chatting at lunchtime, Kris has a gift for building trust and helping students feel excited to express themselves.
